What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a wonderful practice found in the Catholic Church whereby
Christians are aided in their walk with Jesus to grow in holiness.  A spiritual director helps the
directee to do this under the guidance of the Holy spirit, who is the true director.
Spiritual direction is not counseling or therapy, but rather offers guidance in the ways of the
spiritual life.  A good director can help you to become more open to the Holy Spirit and to see
obstacles in your spiritual life and give you the tools to learn how to over come them.
Thus  drawing  you into a deeper life of prayer and  a deeper understanding of God's love and plan for
your good and not for woe.  That's why it can be a wonderful help
when you are discerning your vocation to have a spiritual director.


Why do people need Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction may be exactly what you need if you are noticing
any of the following:

  • You are looking for something, but you can't quite put your finger on it...you
may be feeling either restless or confused (which frequently happens
when trying to decide your vocation)
  • You often find yourself talking with others about God
  • You have had a powerful religious or spiritual experience that you would
like to explore with someone who would be sensitive to it.
